In Sickness and in Health: A Guided Walk

  • City information Centre Saint Paul's Churchyard London, England, EC4M 8BX United Kingdom (map)

Dissect London’s history of disease, medicine and healing on a specialist guided walk through the historic heart of The City and London Bridge.

The spectre of disease and death was ever-present for much of London’s past. And in recent times has returned to haunt us again.

Our guided tour take us through the historic heart of London to discover more about the people and places connected with spiritual and physical healing through the ages. We will learn about the monks and nuns who ran ‘hospitals’ as charitable lodging houses; and how these developed into of two of London’s most respected modern hospitals. We will hear about the role of herbs and natural remedies as we visit a City garden. We will cross the River Thames, the lifeblood of London, but also the cause of sickness in the past. The final section of our tour ventures into areas once famous for brothels, prisons and ‘smelly’ industries, now a top dining destination, and home to a world-leading centre for life sciences and medicine.

Our walk is also an opportunity to look after our wellbeing as we take a purposeful stroll through some of the most fascinating corners of the city. Your guide is accredited City of London guide Sarah Williams-Robbins, aka Mrs Londoner, who has a background in health promotion.

Please arrive at least 5 minutes ahead of the start time as walks will begin promptly.
